How’s your body’s stress response doing?
Answer these questions to find out:
Do you crave sweet foods or drinks?
Do you regularly experience anxiety?
Are you gaining abdominal fat?
Ever notice having a rapid heart rate without exertion?
Do you have high blood pressure?
Are your blood sugars high?
Do you often feel distracted?
Is it difficult for you to fall asleep or stay asleep?
Feel like you have no energy?
Experiencing irritability?
If you answered yes to three or more, it’s possible your body’s stress response is weakened. Not doing something about this will hurt the quality and length of your life.
When it comes to stress, there are many factors you can use to manage it well, such as restructuring your daily schedule, delegating tasks to others, exercising, taking breaks, or learning effective communication. But if you don’t have the physical stamina, you’ll probably have a harder time following through with these.
One factor you can’t leave out of the equation is how you’re fueling your body.
Stress increases the demand for fuel – this doesn’t mean doubling up on portions.
The fuel that stress demands is a little more specific. On any day, we need protein, fiber, anti-inflammatory fats, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Consuming fuel that’s less concentrated in refined carbs, animal-derived fats, alcohol and caffeine is further supportive of a calmer response to stress.
But if your body’s stress response is severely weak (i.e. you answered yes to most questions), then you might benefit from adding:
Ashwaganda. It brings calming effects and better sleep.
Magnesium and B-vitamins. A stressed body craves them both, and they support better energy levels and concentration.
Vitamin C. Stress hurts your immune system. Boosting with vitamin C can provide your body with the strength it needs to fight viruses and harmful bacteria.
Including these nutrients will take you from weak and reactive to strong and effective!
